ISSUE: A certain industry organization is "running the BTR"?
Yes, there seems to be a 'good old boy network' running the BTR...and rumor has it that ASHI® is a big part of the problem. But ASHI® and AZ-ASHI® members are NOT the problem. It's just a few people, who happen to be in ASHI® leadership positions, who are also on certain committees at the BTR. And yes, those people should absolutely know better. What's worse, the BTR is allowing this conflict of interest to exist.
If the President of AZ-ASHI is also on the licensing agency’s Rules and Standards Committee, who's interest is he really representing? That of Arizona Home Inspectors? AZ ASHI's? His own? You see why it's a problem? As an elected official in AZ ASHI, he should be promoting the interests of ASHI members (home inspectors). As a member of the BTR's Home Inspector Rules & Standards Committee, he should be representing the interest of the BTR (which is supposedly the public's interest). The two can often conflict, which is why it's called a CONFLICT OF INTEREST!
And he's not the only one. There are others in AZ ASHI leadership positions, who are working very closely with the BTR in ways that are not necessarily good for home inspectors. Again, I do NOT think ASHI or even AZ ASHI officially is the problem. And it's possible this could also be happening with members of the leadership from other organizations, however, I'm not aware of any such situations.
Ideally, the BTR’s Executive Director and/or Board members should have identified these conflicts of interest, and either prevented them or eliminated them. But as usual, the BTR's management seems completely incapable of recognizing an obvious conflict of interest. And these are the people responsible for enforcing the ethical standards in our industry?
If the Board members and Executive Director are okay with having conflicts of interest on the BTR's Committees, it will undoubtedly take a change to our law in order to resolve this problem.
